A Guide to the local area

The South Coast is a hidden gem with crystal clear waters which are full of activities for the whole family. The Malua Bay Rise Estate is just minutes away from swimming, surfing, fishing or just relaxing at the beach.

Just a walk away

Just a 10 minute walk away is the seasonally patrolled Malua Bay beach. Swim, surf, beach and rock fish, diving or walking, something for the whole family, including the family dog.

The Location

Malua Bay is about halfway between town centres Batemans Bay and Moruya. Both areas have shopping centres, clubs, industrial centres, medical and other facilities. Batemans is 14 minutes to the north and Moruya 22 minutes to the south.

Batemans Bay Facilities

Batemans is the bigger of the two. There are the big three supermarkets (Coles, Woolies and Aldi). The Village Centre shopped has undercover all-day parking and easy access. There are waterfront cafes and restaurants and a marina nearby.  

The industrial area in Batemans has a Bunnings Warehouse, mechanics, furniture centres, home improvement stores and more.

Moruya Facilities

Moruya has Woolies and IGA supermarkets, medical centres, general shops, cafes and an industrial area. The Saturday waterfront markets are a must-do.

Local Shops

There is Malua Bay shop with a great butcher, newsagent, a pharmacy, real estate agents, Burgo’s IGA and a bottle shop. There is also a pizza café and two places to get your morning coffee.

Surf Beach shops has an IGA, pharmacy and two cafes. Tomakin has an IGA and restaurant right next to the golf course.

The Capital

Canberra is a two hours drive, in a trip locals call “going over the mountain” (the Clyde mountain).

It’s an easy trip with stops in Braidwood and Bungendore along the way.  You can drive or take Rixons Buses door to door service.

Social and Sporting Clubs

The Malua Bay club is two minutes by foot. There are lawn bowls, a good Chinese restaurant and social events.

Other clubs in the area include Catalina Country Club (14mins), Moruya Golf Club (23 mins), Batemans Bay Soldiers (14 mins) and Tomakin Sport Club. These all have restaurants and social events. They also offer a free courtesy bus for pick-ups and drop offs.

Golf Clubs

A short drive with gets you to one of several clubs including Tomakin for a quick 9 holes, Catalina, Moruya and Tuross.

Local Produce

The region is famous for producing the Sydney Rock Oyster, as close as the Clyde River in Batemans Bay. There are several local oyster farmers and fisherman selling their catch. Narooma hosts the annual Oyster festival.

There’s are also local dairies cheese makers and vegie farmers. The best place to find all of them is in Moruya at the local farmers market every Tuesday.

Restaurants & Cafes

There are plenty to choose from in Batemans, Moruya, Mogo, Mossy Point, Tomakin, Surf Beach, Batehaven. There are even a couple of speciality coffee roasters.

If you don’t feel like driving at night, take one of the courtesy buses to one of the local clubs. For memebers, they pick up and drop you home at no charge.  

Beaches

The area is home to dozens of beaches. There are long flat beached like Corrigans, Broulee and Berngello. Smaller ones like Mackenzies, Tomakin, Barlings, Surf Beach and Caseys. Then there are many even smaller and tucked away, but we’ll let you find those yourself.  

There are several boat ramps in the area, including Malua Bay.

Transport

Rixons Buses are a local company offering a daily door to door service to and from Canberra. They also offer regular package tours and day trips. www.rixonsbus.com.au

Premier Buses run twice per day from the far south to Sydney.

Priors operates the local bus service and school buses.

Airport

The Moruya airport is an 18-minute drive away. Rex Airlines operate a loop service three times per day covering Moruya, Sydney and Merimbula. It’s a nice regional airline and the trip to Sydney is less than an hour.

Local Markets

There are regular markets, all a short drive away. There are:

  • Moruya Arts and Craft every Saturday.
  • Moruya SAGE Farmers Market every Tuesday.
  • Batemans Bay Sunday Market is a local community-based market at Corrigans Beach held on the first and Sundays each month.
  • Batemans Bay Growers Market – every Thursday.
  • There are also markets at Nelligen, Narooma, Dalmeny, Tilba and Bermagui. These are all worth a visit.

Medical Centres

Batemans Bay and Moruya each have a hospital, several medical centres, some specialists and pharmacies. Close to Malua Bay is the medical centre at Batehaven.

And for a nice day out

Mogo needs a mention here. It’s a few minutes’ drive away and host to several small craft stores and cafes.

For a longer day out, to the south there are places visit like Tilba Tilba, where they filmed River Cottage Australia, Narooma and Bermagui. To the north, you have Murramarang, Durras and even Ulladulla.
